All companies trademark the names when their product is going to launch. The New Sony PS5 is going to launch on the 17th for the rest of the world. But the Indian release date is not revealed yet. You might be wondering why? here’s the funny as well as an interesting story. One Indian Guy Trademarked PS5 name already in India….
The recent report by Mako Reactor revealed the scene. Playstation fans in India were getting furious over not giving any date for the release of PS5 in India. This might be the reason too. Cause the guy already trademarked the name PS5, so Sony can’t get that name in India. This came up from the Indian Government site of Public Documentation.
Sony might get problems with this one. If you remember Asus had to rename its Zenfone series in India cause one mobiel company already filed the trademarks for the “Zen” name. They had to change it to Asus 6Z only. But in case of Asus it was trademarked by company, in case of Sony its trademarked by an individual.
Indian Guy Trademarked PS5
You can see in the below image. The guy named Hitesh Aswani of Delhi already trademarked the PS5 name back on October 29, 2019. Sony filed the trademark on February 6, 2020. You can see both the images from the official documentation below. You can see the Indian Guy Trademarked PS5 name in the below images.
Hitesh seems to be a guy who sells the toys, Video game machines, sports and stationery goods. We are not the law experts but the current status of trademark is “Opposed”. This happens when a third party files an opposition against a trademark, ifย there is a similar trademark published in the Journal or if the trademark is alleged to be non-distinctive as per trademark and patent attorney.
The trademark opposition case is not a quick one. It can take years for the judgment. Though it will not be any problem for Sony if they prove the existence before the filing by another individual who is unrelated to Sony.
If you don’t know Sony already filed the trademarks upto PS10. Maybe I am wrong but this shows Sony doesn’t care about the Indian Markets that much. Its might hurt Indian gamers but its the truth. Also, the reasons are obvious ones. Indian people tends to buy the older generations consoles as the new one gets launched. As the prices for older one gets down and also some jailbreak tricks which are very much popular.
The second reason is in India Gaming Piracy is at its peak. Its not even get opposed socially. PS5 games price now increased to almost 4999INR. Now you are not going to see piracy go away anytime soon. But there are reasons of it too. In India, very little population has access to the high end PCs and playstations so they would obviously go for piracy for saving money even though its not legal.
Hope Sony fix this issue and PS5 release date in India will come up soon. PS5 is going to launch on rest of the world on 17th November. If you were planning to buy it on this Diwali festive season then you might get disappointed.
