The Qualcomm Snapdragon processors are mostly preferred for Android devices. The stability, performance is better than other competitors in the price range. The flagship grade processors are made by Qualcomm. Last year Qualcomm released its flagship processor Snapdragon 845 which was really a good one. 845 is now employed in many smartphones today. The cheapest Snapdragon 845 on Poco F1 which is available at 20K. After the Apple released the A12 processor based on 7nm fabrication process and the A12X on Macbook even got the scores better than desktop processors. But the power use is limited. Huawei also released the Kirin 980 based on 7nm fabrication this year. Now, its Qualcomm Snapdragon turn. The 855 is based on 7nm process obviously. So here is the full difference you need to know Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 VS Snapdragon 845.
The Architecture:
Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 is based on a 10nm fabrication process. 855 is now moved to the 7nm fabrication process. This will give 855 a boost in energy efficiency and performance. As we know lesser the number of fabrication process more is the power efficiency. Due to architecture, now it is more compact than 845 even with more number of transistors.
The CPU, Performance, And Connectivity:
The Snapdragon 855 based on 8 cores, the one primary core is based on CortexA76 based which is clocked at speed of 2.4Ghz. 3 cores are performance cores those are also CortexA76 based clocked at 2.42Ghz. Remaining 4 are the efficiency cores based on ARM’s Cortex A55 architecture clocked at 1.8Ghz.
As per Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 855 will be the biggest improvement in terms of performance of 45% than the Snapdragon 845. That’s really damn cool. About the 845 which was having Andreno 630 which was offering 30% boost over the predecessor Snapdragon 835.
The 5G technology is now coming, Huawei already launched its 5G technology in China. The US is trying to ban Huawei from all over the countries for its 5G technology and some concerns with the privacy. No wonder the Snapdragon 855 will come with 5G support, if any OEM wants to give the 5G support they can add X50 modem along with the mWave module which will enable to get the 5G speeds.
GPU Improvements ISP and NPU:
Snapdragon 845 was having the Andreno 630 GPU where the 855 have Andreno 855 which Qualcomm stated it will give about a 45% performance boost.
The Andreno 640 supports true HDR Gaming, and games based on physically based rendering (PBR). It will also use less juice from your smartphone resulting in a better efficient overall gaming. The enhanced machine learning capabilities with AI functionality 855 is coming with a bang.
One more thing is the X24 modem, this is the new modem in the form of an LTE modem. To be replaced for old LTE modems. The KYRON 485 is also expected to perform much better than the 845. The KYRO 485 gold is clocked at 2.84Ghz and have a wider 512KB L2 cache. This will help to speed up web browsing, app opening time compared to Kirin 980 and even the Apple A12 as per Qualcomm.

NPU, AI, and Hexagon 690 DSP:
The 855 is the first Qualcomm’s chipset with dedicated AI capability. We have already seen in the Kirin processors dedicated NPU, AI unit now its coming to 855. Along with Spectra 630 for better pictures in portrait mode, HDR portrait etc.
The Hexagon 690 DSP includes the ”TENSOR XCELERATOR” which is the dedicated interference for machine learning. The TENSOR unit will be capable of running the AI and other tasks independently.
Other Key Improvements:
- Faster WiFi and network
- High-End Video Audio support
- Better security
- AI and enhanced machine learning
- 45% performance boost
