Telegram launched in the 2013 has steadily increased their userbase. Recently, CEO Durov revealed that Telegram reaches 500 million users now. The recent traffic could be due to the alternatives searched by users due to WhatsApp privacy policies. Durov in his telegram channel revealed plans of the Telegram for the future.
Telegram will commit to privacy and its values as it was before as per Durov. Obviously, the features provided by Telegram like storage etc are free. They will need lots of funding to run the servers without any problems. Personally, I started using Telegram back in the 2015-16. Later I searched more about Telegram bots.
It was one of the coolest thing I seen. Now every group or channel uses bots to manage the users automatically. Also, the cloud backup great you don’t need to store your backup locally. Recently, the new app is rising the Signal app mostly because Tesla CEO tweeted about the same. Lots of memes and stuff coming about switching from WhatsApp to Telegram or signal.
Telegram Reaches 500 Million Users
The CEO and founder Durov thanked for Telegram reaches 500 million users mark. For the future plans, he stated about the funding. Initially, he bear the cost of the servers from his own pocket as per his message on his telegram channel. But surely with the users going demand is more.
All the features that are currently free will stay free. We will add some new features for business teams or power users. Some of these features will require more resources and will be paid for by these premium users. Regular users will be able to keep enjoying Telegram – for free, forever.

So, Telegram will add new power users (premium) functions for the telegram. Taking a jib at WhatsApp, he stated Telegram is not going to get sold like WhatsApp. The quality and perfection you can give to users can never be attained if you become part of corporation like WhatsApp. The good thing is the previous features will be free as it is and the new features coming from next year will be available for the premium power business users.
The channels on Telegram has millions of followers. So Durov stated that, most of the channels shows the third-party ads. But now Telegram will introducing our own Ad Platform for public one-to-many channels – one that is user-friendly, respects privacy and allows us to cover the costs of servers and traffic. Ending his message he stated,
If Telegram starts earning money, the community should also benefit. For example, If we monetize large public one-to-many channels via the Ad Platform, the owners of these channels will receive free traffic in proportion to their size. Or, if Telegram introduces premium stickers with additional expressive features, the artists who make stickers of this new type will also get a part of the profit. We want millions of Telegram-based creators and small businesses to thrive, enriching the experience of all our users.

The new WhatsApp Privacy policy is making users uncomfortable right now. This might be the best chance for the Telegram, Signal and other apps for getting the userbase. Telegram reaches 500 million users might be just a start. But getting from WhatsApp to other messaging apps is not that easy. WhatsApp has very high userbase, specially in India every colleges, institutions uses WhatsApp for all their work. We will get to see more clearer picture in coming times.
