Recently, Xiaomi Remi Note 7/Pro launched in China. The main highlight of this smartphone was the dewdrop notch and the 48MP camera in the budget range price tag. After the launch, everyone is curious about how Xiaomi Redmi can provide the 48MP camera in this price range along without compromising other specifications. Basically, the rear camera is the sensor is Samsung GM1 sensor. Let’s get some details about this camera setup. Follow the post, Is the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 48MP Camera a Real Or Just Gimmick? Let’s take the information in steps.
How The Digital Cameras Works:
Digital Cameras has the basic sensor. This sensor only captures the black and white images. The digital cameras have ISP i.e. Image Signal Processor. The Bayer Filter generally detects the 3 colors one 25% Red, 25% Blue and 50% Green. The Green color is more sensitive to our Human eye. The ISP combines the 3 colors using the data it captured. This combining the colors to give output is called as DEMOSAICING.
The 48 Megapixels Samsung GM1 Sensor:
In the regular sensor, we get the 1 color per pixel. But in the case of Samsung GM1 sensor, it has the thing called Quad Bayer Array. This quad bayer array provides the 4 pixels together. There is a limitation of this sensor for the 2×2 array it detects it as one large pixel. So the output from the Samsung GM1 sensor is technically 12Megapixels. But, we can’t call it a fake because by software optimization Xiaomi can get the 48Megapixels output. The reason is there is a lot more raw image data available which can be used to get the 48Megapixels image output. So yes, it gives the 48 Megapixels picture.
But obviously, the image output will not be better than the image captured by the native 48 Megapixels sensor like Sony IMX586. But it is definitely better than the 12MP camera used in other phones.
So what are the benefits this Quad Array arrangement can provide:
This quad array arrangement benefits the image output. As it combines the 4 pixels together the colors will be more good, the dynamic range can be passed to ISP. So this thing will result in better photos with better quality.
As stated, each pixel is of 0.8 microns then after combining the 4, We will get 1.6 Microns. The larger the Micron size the better the light, better the image output. Xiaomi in the launch event said they are using the same algorithm as they used in MI Mix 3 night mode. The Mi Mix 3 night mode was really good. So it is very interesting to see how well they do in case of Redmi Note 7 Pro.
So the conclusion is the 48 Megapixels camera is not fake. Though it is not a native 48MP camera but, In this price range, surely its really worth. If you like this post don’t forget to share it!!
